Anti-vaccine rhetoric, alter-science, conspiracy theories, romantic archaeology, esotericism, New Age movements… Irrational thought is experiencing a rapid surge, amplified by digital networks. Everyone encounters it on the Internet. It infiltrates all spheres, becoming, for some—whether intentionally or naively—a genuine business model. Thinking outside or against scientific rationality is emerging as a new worldview that is both alternative and radical, often catastrophist. It envisions a world where science and progress are seen as fundamentally negative, contrasting with an idealized past where humanity lived in harmony with nature, free from disease and famine.
Despite the rise of irrationality, few academic researchers have attempted to analyze these discourses. This book examines the main manifestations of irrational thought in the 21st century from a resolutely multidisciplinary perspective—sociology, anthropology, history, politics, philosophy, and literary studies. It deconstructs the ideologies and cultures underlying these anti-system narratives. The authors also explore how these milieus contribute to the subversion of established values and, at times, emerge as creators of high-quality artistic and cultural productions.

Discours antivaccin, alterscience, complotisme, conspirationnisme, archéologie « romantique », ésotérisme, New Age… La pensée irrationnelle connaît un essor rapide, démultiplié par les réseaux numériques. Chacun la côtoie sur Internet. Elle s’immisce dans tous les milieux, devenant pour certains, plus ou moins naïfs, un véritable fonds de commerce. Penser en dehors ou contre la rationalité scientifique devient une nouvelle vision du monde à la fois alternative et radicale, souvent catastrophiste. Un monde où la science et le progrès paraissent fondamentalement négatifs, à l’opposé d’un passé idéal où l’homme vivait en harmonie avec la nature, sans maladie ni famine.
Malgré cette effervescence de l’irrationnel, peu de chercheurs académiques ont tenté d’analyser ces discours. En s’intéressant aux principales manifestations de cette pensée irrationnelle au XXIe siècle, dans une optique résolument pluridisciplinaire (sociologie, anthropologie, histoire, politique, philosophie, études littéraires), cet ouvrage déconstruit les idéologies, les cultures à l’œuvre dans ces discours antisystèmes. Les auteurs examinent également de quelle manière ces milieux participent de la subversion des valeurs établies et deviennent, parfois, des producteurs artistiques et culturels de qualité.
