Biographical Note

A filmmaker, author, independent journalist and visual artist, Laurent Courau has spent more than thirty years documenting the technological, artistic and cultural transformations shaping the twenty-first century. His work encompasses films, books, visual art and collaborations across print media, radio and television. Throughout his career, he has created and produced content for both traditional and digital platforms, working with organisations and artists including Arte, Canal+, Le Monde, Libération, Universal Studios, Microsoft, Sony Music, Nirvana, Aerosmith, the Eiffel Tower and the Tour de France.

After a nomadic childhood spent between Italy, Morocco, Libya, India, the Cévennes and Catalonia, Courau returned to his native Paris, where he became involved as a teenager in the punk, independent and underground scenes of the late 1980s. Drawing on the emerging digital tools of the time, he began producing his first films independently, using whatever resources were available. Driven by a long-standing fascination with media and creative technologies, he launched La Spirale, in the mid-1990s, as the internet was beginning to reach a wider audience.

Having lived successively in Greece, Switzerland, France and New York City, he continued to pursue his work as a writer and filmmaker through projects such as Mutations pop & crash culture, Vampyres, and The Occult Sources. He remains an avid explorer of the world, particularly its strangest and most unexpected territories. Today, he creates dreamlike worlds inspired by his nomadic experiences, working in dialogue with artificial intelligence and infusing these technologies with his own imagination to evoke the landscapes, spirits, witches and magicians encountered throughout his travels.
